I seem to be getting a lot of hits for websites that are near me or in my country. I would like to filter it a bit, I’m worried that I’m missing stuff elsewhere.

That’s a feature of most search engines lately that the returned results depend heavily on location (based on IP), cookies, browser, OS, language etc.
One workaround is to use multiple search engines, e.g. via the Web (Deep) search set. Another one is to duplicate & customize existing plugins, e.g. Google/Bing (see Window > Plugins & Scanners).
You might also open Google in Safari, go to Settings, and change Location to your country without an address or political division. E.g., change location to CAN.
