Smart group: don't display the sub group documents in the main list

hello dear community,

I’m trying to create a smart group, which would search in a specific group (“Pantry”), which has one sub-group (“Spices”).

I have created such group with the following rule:

but for some reason, this smart group returns the documents stores in the “Pantry” group directly, and also in its’ subgroup “Spices”:

Here as an example, baking powder is listed twice.

My expectation: that this smart group would follow the structure of the “Pantry” Group:

Pantry Group
* Document 1
* Document 2
Sub-Group "Spices"
   * Document 1 in Spices Subgroup
   * Document 2 in Spices Subgroup

OR at least show them in one list, and not display the documents twice as in my 2nd screenshot.

p.s. “exclude sub groups” option in the smart group settings seem to have no effect…

thanks in advance!

This option excludes items in subgroups, not the subgroups on their own. Therefore adding the condition Kind is Any Document should return the desired results.

thanks! that did the trick. now I only have one list of the ingredients (from both, pantry and it’s subgroup “Spices”).

the rule is:

@cgrunenberg , apologies for a quesiton not directly related to this thread.

I’m trying to run a Chat Prompt on that smart group. My impression was that it would be sufficient just to select it in the sidebar (as per manual):

however, after running a prompt (ChatGPT 5 mini) it’s clear to me that it does not “see” the documents from the smart group created previously (“Pantry”).

Can Chat be used on Smart Groups at all…?

here is the issue I’m facing with the newly created smart group:

I answered this in the other topic you opened. Short answer it seems that the concept of groups is unknown.
