I created some intelligent groups (on the basis of some searches), but unfortunately, they aren’t synced between devices. How can I achieve it?

Are you referring to local or global smart groups?
Local smart groups sync between DEVONthink and DEVONthink To Go 4. Global smart groups do not.
What are local and global smart groups…?
Local smart groups are those inside a single database. Global smart groups are, well global – outside any database, residing at the bottom of the left hand sidebar in DT under the heading “smart groups”.
Thanks! I was referring to global smart groups. Now I’ve tested with the local ones, and it works. Thanks. ![]()

Some of my local smart groups are not syncing. For instance, I have one inside a database that is based on a tag and a rating. When I open it on my Mac (DT Pro 4.1.1), it shows six items. When I open it on DTTG 4, it has an endless list of items starting with repeated entries of the empty group ‘Annotations’. The same results occur when I open other local smart groups.
This is probably due to the query that makes up the smart group. Please share the query with us, best in a support ticket, and we’ll try to reproduce it.
I’m definitely experiencing serious quirkiness with smart groups between desktop and mobile apps. There seems to be some issues with Dttg 4 interpreting the full range of queries.
I’m admittedly probably pushing this new feature to the limits (to see how much I can lean into it )… it’s not ready for my workflows just yet…
In particular, if you use custom metadata sets e.g. I tried one called mdtaskstatus which can have values of To Do, In Progress, Done, etc. Then I wanted to setup a smart group that checks whether this value is NOT set yet (so I know which documents haven’t been triaged yet or might be missing some essential metadata that I rely on).
On Mac, the smart group works well… I can search for sets that are “undefined”. Sync that across to mobile though and it gets very confused. Especially when you have a couple of such checks (e.g. I also have mdtaskurgency with Urgent, Important, Not Important) in a smart group. It pretty much corrupts the smart group when you edit it on Dttg.
From what I can tell it looks like the query gets built something like this…
mdtaskstatus== mdtaskurgency==
There being nothing after the “==” to indicate “undefined”. However when Dttg loads that into its UI representation it gets confused and (I think) thinks mdtaskurgency is the value for mdtaskstatus. Then commences a chain reaction of destruction and the whole smart group breaks.
Looking forward to the combined custom metadata and smart groups between platforms stabilising. I’m sure these quirks will get ironed out with time and then this is going to be an incredibly powerful (and unique) set of features. I’ve tried nearly every productivity tool stack in existence and there’s nothing out there that’ll do the kinds of things DEVONthink is now |–| this close to delivering.
Very exciting! (When it works!
)
Yes, custom smart groups could still have quirks despite our month-long public beta test as queries can get complex. Please let us know the exact query (e.g. from the Mac’s smart group editor) and we will try to reproduce the it here.
