Smart Quote disabled every time DT closes

Hi there,

I prefer using smart quotes when writing, so I’ve enabled these two settings:

  • In System Preferences - Keyboard - Text Input - Edit - All Input Sources, Use smart quotes and dashes
  • In DEVONthink, Edit - Substitutions, Smart Quotes

The problem is, every time all DEVONthink windows are closed (quitting the app isn’t necessary) and I open a new window, the second setting (in DT’s Edit menu) will become disabled by itself, resulting in me no longer using smart quotes when writing within DT. (Important update: Smart Quote disabled every time DT closes - #6 by xurc)

Am I misconfiguring something or is this caused by a bug somewhere?

I’m using DT Pro 3.9.16 on macOS 15.7.1 (24G231).

The options in the Edit menu are temporary. You set the defaults in Settings > Editing > General:

Thank you for pointing that out!

I navigated to that page and saw that smart quotes was already enabled (though smart dashes aren’t, if that matters). So I guess either that’s the default setting, or I have manually enabled it in the past and have since forgotten about its existence.

Either way, since Settings > Editing > General > Smart quotes has already been enabled all along, something is still not working as expected for me.

Weird, then I don’t know what’s going on. It works here.

Did you try opening a document?

After I change the default, close all windows and open a new main window, I don’t see the change reflected in the Edit menu before I open a text document I can edit. (In my case markdown. My default view is “Preview”, the change is only reflected when I switch to “Source”)

After closing all windows, how are you opening the new window? Are you using a workspace? That could be a culprit for remembering settings.

Ok that was a serious oversight on my end, my apologies. I forgot to mention this crucial bit of information in the main post.

When I open a new window, the *Edit > Substitutions > Smart Quotes` menu does remain enabled and work as expected if I’m editing, say, a Markdown document. When I said in the main post that this menu becomes disabled, it seems to only apply to the various text boxes in the UI, e.g., Name/Aliases/URL and so on in the Generic inspector, or if you click on a database/group/record to rename it.

This behavior occurs regardless of how I open the new window, whether it’s by clicking the icon in the dock or activating a workspace. Thank you for pointing that out though, I definitely wouldn’t have considered that possibility.

Also, I forgot to mention an important detail in my main post, which I added in Smart Quote disabled every time DT closes - #6 by xurc. The menu does remain enabled when editing documents, and it only becomes disabled for certain UI text fields.
