Some downloaded items do not appear to be purgeable

I have about 280 downloaded items in DTTG on my iPad. It is set to keep around 250 items downloaded at all times. Just about all the oldest items that are downloaded do not show a “Purge” menu item in the contextual menu (long press on the item in the sidebar) while the more recent items do show a “Purge” option. Why would the older items not be purgeable? They do not appear to be locked or have other relevant permissions set. I would like to remove a number of these older items from the Downloaded list but can’t find a way to do so.

  • Are they in a group?
    • In the same group?

They are in a Group, but different groups. I checked the enclosing group for a few of them, and the Download settings had neither “Always” nor “On demand” set.

I am running DTTG 3.8.16 (17503)

  • Do you have multiple sync locations enabled?
    • If so, go into the Action (…) menu > Settings > Synchronization: Locations, tap the Action button, and choose Edit. What is Download Files set to for each active sync location?

Note: Version 3 is in maintenance and will be retired from development and support at some point. Version 4 is the active focus of development. We highly encourage you to upgrade sooner rather than later, if your mobile device supports iOS/iPadOS 26.

I didn’t realize that DTTG had gone to version 4. I downloaded that and am currently syncing locations. Perhaps that will address the issue. Thanks so much!

One other question, do you recommend deleting DTTG version 3 on my ipad/iphone after installing version 4?

You’re welcome and yes, DEVONthink To Go 3 has been out since last the 3rd of December.

Please clarify “locations” (as that’s what I asked about previously).

And yes, now that you’ve moved to version 4, you should delete DEVONthink To Go 3 – including its app data – and reboot the device.

I have a single iCloud (Cloudkit) location that has several DEVONthink databases syncing. In DEVONthink To Go v 3, “Download files” was set to On Demand.

Noted and thanks for clarifying.
