Sorter and Inbox

For my purposes, the Global Inbox was annoying because it requires waaay too many steps to manage a final destination and delete. Also, I couldn’t tell if I’d already moved something so I would wind up with lots of duplicates.

I’ve come up with something that works better for me – maybe somebody else has already posted this, but a search of forum didn’t turn up anything similar, so here it is:

  1. Open a database and rename the Inbox smart folder *database Inbox, using whatever name you use for that database. The asterisk puts the Inbox at the top of your folder hierarchy.

  2. Drag the renamed Inbox folder into Sorter.

  3. Repeat for each database.

This allows you to bypass the Global Inbox whenever you want to, and a database does not have to be open when you drag something into its Sorter Inbox.

And note: if you Command drag something in from Finder, it will MOVE; without the Command key, it will COPY.

Another tip – I like the Smart Folders (such as for Duplicates, PDFs, etc.), but don’t like having them alphabetized in the hierarchy, so I grouped them in a folder named *Smart Folders – the asterisk places that folder directly below the Inbox at the top of the hierarchy. Very convenient.

This sounds like an interesting way to do this - I’m going to give it a try.

Regarding the asterisk - in the Finder and some other apps I find that adding an opt-space at the beginning will raise the entry to the top but this doesn’t work in DTPO - the hard space gets ignored. Too bad, too, as I prefer the hard space to * in such lists - less distracting.

It’s tips like this that makes DTPO even more useful/powerful than it already is. Thanks for sharing it.

I use the “_” symbol for putting folders first in the list

I agree with DCBerk; FWIW this is how I have my Sorter set up.
