Bill,
Wonderful news. I was not aware that a public beta is now available until your post here. (I missed the news though I follow your feed.)
I have added the followings statement to the DevonSync page (with appropriate links):
I’ve also marked DevonSync as EOL (end of life) on our Lion and Mountain Lion compatibility pages. For the time being it will still be available, mainly for the benefit of current users.
Please note that I will be on holiday from mid-July to the end of July, so if the final is released during that period I will not be able to immediately update our site.
Good luck!
Just to give this thread (treat? ) a “rebirth” and pull it up again.
Beta sync is based on 32-bit (plugin) so its about time to move a bit and -at least- compile the plugin with the 64-bit switch set…
Not to mention that it would be great to get regular syncing capabilities within this century…
I don’t expect that it will take 88 years to release the next public beta.
The objective of the Sync plugin is to allow sync of DEVONthink database among multiple computers, via direct connection, local network, WebDAV or other cloud vehicles such as Dropbox.
Cloud utilities such as Dropbox are essentially file copiers, and are not capable of reliably running a complex dynamic database such as a DEVONthink database. The Sync plugin should allow one to use Dropbox as a cloud vehicle for sync, but must adapt its code to certain peculiarities in Dropbox code to do so, not only reliably but quickly. In the case of Dropbox, it’s a challenge to sync BOTH reliably and quickly.
Many users (including me) have databases that hold tens of thousands of documents, with associated metadata. One of the challenges of the Sync plugin development is that (in the nature of concurrency programming) a bug might show up only once in 20,000 transactions; that requires a lot of testing time to detect and eradicate such bugs.
Nathan has taken over the Sync plugin project and is making great progress.
Yes, there will be a public beta 2 of the Sync plugin in the not too distant future, and it will run in 64-bit mode.
I’m especially excited by the potentials for collaborative sharing of databases among work groups as an outcome of the Sync plugin. I can always handle changes among my own databases by using a portable device to copy (or run) databases among my Macs. But collaborative sharing opens up new vistas as to how DEVONthink can be used!
I am coming to this discussion late and am not well-informed about sync issues. But in case this man’s opinion is worth anything: I like wireless LAN syncing (vs. iCloud, DropBox, et cet.). I just want it to be automatic. Every day, when I open iTunes, lots of data gets synchronized with my iPad. If DEVONthink data got synchronized at the same time, I’d be thrilled. I don’t like having to initiate syncs manually. I don’t care to do it every day, so I can never assume that my data is up-to-date.
(And I wish that Apple/Filemaker would take the same approach with Bento, where I keep my non-text data. Yet another sync that I have to initiate manually and don’t care to do every day and so I cannot count on current data on my iPad.)
This is a feature that I’ve really been wanting, but I’m hesitant to use a beta 1 technology with my production databases. I just want peer-to-peer sync between two machines on my LAN. Anyone know how risky this plugin would be for that simple of a syncing scenario?
Is this thing EVER going to get off the ground? It’s been years now. I really don’t know whether to move on to something else.
Public beta rev 1 was months ago. Blog said in the weeks to come there would be updates etc.
Can you at least post the status? Ran into major problems, working well, on beta 8 or 9 and we missed it, about to release for real or something?
Sync is really not working well at all. I want a simple sync the entire database or don’t sync this database and I want sync to happen between all my devices, several macs, iPad & iPhone.
I just lost some files because there are several versions of a folder in the sync group, I tried to delete one of what I thought were duplicates and everything in the folder in the whole database got deleted totally out of the system. Had a backup so I was able to recover the data but it shouldn’t be so hard to set up sync!
I recently watched the info video on the new sync plugin - looks great.
The version of DevonThink Pro used in the video was 2.5 - I’m using 2.4.3 and an update check indicates that this is the latest version.
It would really be greatly appreciated to get some sort of indication of 2.5 availability. Moving documents back and forth between two macs by opening the database on one with the other is becoming quite cumbersome…
Thanks.
Best regards,
Hans
DT 2.5 is a private beta at the moment but the Sync plugin only requires 2.4.3, not 2.5.
