It is indeed curious, but what is it supposed to do? Is it math related?
iA Writer and Marked 2 also preview the text as ([)hello(]), while Ulysses and Byword preview the text as ($$)hello($$).
Gruber’s Dingus (why does that sound wrong? ) also renders it as ($$)hello($$).
