i had setup bonjour sync which synced successfully 4 databases. I now noticed that the sync options are completly gone. I do not see anything listed nor can i add or edit anything.
I work on macOS 15.3.1 and verified that network and full disk access is granted. I also deactivated firewall although DEVONthink was allowed incoming connections.
I then downloaded the installer again and replaced the existing DEVONthink app. Now i do see all options again.
Anyone has ever seen that behaviour and has a clue what the issue can be caused from? I would like to understand possible root causes, as i am currently do not have any explanation how i could have caused this behaviour …
Download the application again from our website (DEVONtechnologies | Download) and replace the installed application with the downloaded one. Does this fix the issue? In that case the old installation was broken.
Hello, as stated i did that already and it fixed it, but the installation was just 4-6 weeks old as it is a new macbook, and i had the sync running previously, because i have my databases there, … i just wonder how i could have damaged the installation that much. I only copied over a few scripts and did some manual cleaning in the databases …

I cannot say for sure, but i think it is high likely that i did not check the sync between the update and the recent time when i noticed the sync options completely gone.
Well, of course i do not have a full transscript of every action, but primarily i renamed some groups, created some groups, moved some documents between them, then deleted some groups. I also used the import mail and mailbox(es) scripts to learn how they function and for the most part deleted the imports after that.
Hello, it did reoccur and i found the root cause. I missed noticing that i added a few translations in DEVONthink 3.app/Resources/de.lproj/Templates.strings. When i do that, sync options are empty, if i copy over the original Templates.strings from the dmg into the app package the sync options are visible again.
A strange behaviour, but i can of course understand that it is not intended to have internal app package files being fideled with. But i think in a previous post we discussed there is no option to have a user specific templates.strings file in user library for now.
Still i would not expect the whole Sync section to vanish by editing a translation file for templates. May i ask again, there is no way to specify translations for multi language templates that i created based on what a learned from you templates, right?

Where did you get the idea you should be modifying the internal resources in the application, especially if you’re referring to templates you created? We certainly would not have provided such instructions. You are modifying the application and its resources. That’s no different than saying, “I put some ball bearings in my engine because I thought it would sound cool, but I don’t know why my car won’t drive now.”

I don’t know how long the OP has been using Macs, but in the old days (pre-OS X), translation (i.e. “localization”) of applications was something users did. The resources were kept separate in the resource fork for that very reason; it’s true that most resources weren’t meant for user customization, but user translations were not unknown, and didn’t hurt anything. In fact, they broadened the reach & usability of applications in additional geographic areas.
If I understand correctly, the OP customized some UI elements for German, and that broke his copy of the application. As you pointed out, altering anything in the application folder (for every .app is a folder) nowadays would cause the signature to be invalidated. It’s interesting that instead of refusing to run DEVONthink due to security concerns, his Mac simply removed all sync destinations from their dialog.
Hello, i learned from your templates to be multi language. I adapted the text templates for journaling to deal with English and German using different sources for quotes. My question was just to ensure that meanwhile (our conversation about this was some years ago) there is not option in the user library or any other place outside the app. I was not implying i got instructions from you that i should or could do it this way. You simply stated then, that there is no external possiblity. You surely also stated then this is not advisable. But then it seemed to have no effect on the app. That was some years ago and if although i found the actual symptom to be odd, i stated above that my behaviour in doing so was the root cause and asked weather now some years later there is still no option for a menu translation outside the app. I did not intend to offend you in any way.

The templates shown in the menu Data > New from Template are actually located in the folder ~/Library/Application Support/DEVONthink 3/Templates.noindex and the templates in this folder can be modified or renamed. But it’s recommended to duplicate templates before modifying them or to lock them after modifications to prevent that updates of the app will overwrite your changes.
In addition, it is possible to localize the name of templates (and scripts) since version 3.9.2:
However, for your own templates it’s usually a lot easier to simply use the desired filename.
That was exactly what i was looking for, will try this - it definitively sounds like a solution to my problem. I will come back should i have questions to the solution mentioned.
