Is it still the case that an app cannot operate continually in the background? I thought that was the case previously but I get alerts sometimes on my iPhone about apps regularly active in the background so maybe that was changed.
The reason i am asking is - on what schedule does DTTG sync databases using either Webdav or Bonjour?
If I keep DTTG open but do not use it in a given day, will the sync turn on at some point?
Would it be desirable to set a shortcut to Open/Activate DTTG on some schedule such as during my usual sleep hours?

Sync is not going to work if DEVONthink To Go is not running.
If it is running, Apple’s Background App Refresh may allow it to sync but it does so on its own schedule and terminates the process within 30 seconds or so.

If nothing is actively happening in our apps, then what would be the point?
(1) There may be items not fully synced from earlier in the day;
(2) I have RSS feeds and other automations to add to my DT3 database even when I am not personally at the computer
(3) I have office staff - sometimes in a different time zone - who may be adding content to the DT3 database when I am not at the computer
Is it possible to set up a Shortcut on iOS which bring DTTG to the forefront on a schedule and thus keeps it active long enough to bring the database sync up to date?
Maybe there is a way, but I’ve not found one. Normally, the volume of sync data for me is not that big and I suspect for you it also may not be as much as you may think, but I don’t know. When I know I want a sync to complete, bring DEVONthink ToGO to the foreground, turn off “Low Power Mode” and let it rip. There is no “schedule” as far as I know as Apple has programming syching to happens when and if the iOS system algorithm decides to do it. Not up to either DEVONthink or you, as far as I know. For me, that’s ok as in a typical day I might have only a dozen files of mb size that need synching. Goes pretty fast on Bonjour, and slower of course on Dropbox.
No, I know of no other solution. And I would hazard a guess that any changes made by your staff would be minimal so I wouldn’t bother trying to sync while you’re asleep, were I in your situation.
But the full sync is nice if I will be reviewing documents that are gigabytes in size which sometimes happens. Having that occur during downtime is desirable.
Oh well - I’ll work out a plan. No question that the combination of improved iPhone/iPad speed/storage and DTTG upgrades in the last few years has made DTTG much more workable for big documents. I gave up a few years ago but it definitely is workable and very useful now on both iPhone and iPad. The concept of a 350Gb database entirely local on an iPhone and indexed for immediate retrieval is really stunning.
Instruct the robot to do the following: (1) enter password to unlock your phone, (2) open DTTG, (3) watch for the sync indicator on screen, and (4) lock the phone when sync is finished.
Remember to put your phone in the right place before you sleep.
Nobody ever claimed the US legal system was designed for efficiency!
It is extremely common for “discovery” or exchange of evidence between parties in a lawsuit to involve exchange of documents which are hundreds of megabytes individually and gigabytes collectively.
Actually it’s way more efficient presently than it used to be - 5-10 years ago this was still being done with exchange of paper records. Most slow-to-change legal firms have finally shifted to digital documents.
I had a case recently where I needed a way to explain to the jury how large several Gigabytes of medical records actualy is. I estimated that if we printed those records and stacked them in one pile they would reach to 1.5 times the height of a standard basketball hoop.
Well I happen to be a long-time pilot and flight instructor - and a flying car has been a dream of mine since before Devonthink.
A great concept, indeed. Let’s hope they make it (I have a PPL(A))
But, regarding the sync schedule, we might be able to improve it a bit but, still, iOS devices are not really made to sync gigabytes of data in the background. Apple pulls some tricks to make it work, in a way, in e.g. Photos, but that is a) a much simpler download and b) Apple can do things we cannot do. There is a method to launch a long download but only for simple downloads (one URL, one file). Our sync is slightly more complicated than that.
The sync is actually working really well. I had to be quite patient with the initial sync but once done performance of DTTG is great and time for re-sync is quite reasonable.
My main observation now is the delay when trying to use Shortcuts with DTTG. If there is an easy fix then that would be appreciated; if not then it’s no big deal. The main functions of DTTG work well and I can just share to an indexed Dropbox folder instead of using DTTG shortcuts.
