Synchronize between 3.8.3 and newer versions

Dear Dt,

is there a limit as to which newer version 3.8.3 will allow for synchronization with? My main workstation runs El Capitan and will continue doing so, and I am wondering if I can update my portable mac to any newer version without losing the sync option.
