The Web Clipping Options in DEVONthink

Clipping web content is a much used and discussed feature in DEVONthink. There are numerous ways to import web content into DEVONthink, e.g., with our browser extension, with bookmarklets, or with the print dialog. To see the range of options in one place, here is a list of them.

  • Use the print dialog to create a PDF. You can even “print” directly to DEVONthink.
  • Clip to a specific location and in a variety of formats with our browser extension via DEVONthink’s Sorter.
  • Use the Share menu > Add to DEVONthink to capture a page, also via the Sorter.
  • Add a bookmark to your database via Data > New > Bookmark and use the commands in the Tools > Document: Capture menu.
  • Install bookmarklets in the Favorites bar of your browser to capture web pages in specific formats. The Selection bookmarklet captures plain text. There is also a separate tip on how to use bookmarklets.
  • With text selected on a web page, use the application’s Services menu to capture in certain formats, e.g., Take Rich Note. Note, the available options are governed by what the browser is reporting. For example, Safari reports a selection as rich text and Firefox reports plain text. You can even append subsequent selections to an existing document, e.g., Append Rich Note.
  • With text selected, copy it. Then in DEVONthink, press ⌘N or choose Data > New > With Clipboard to create a new document appropriate to the type of content copied.
  • Select text or an image, then drag and drop it into DEVONthink.
  • Capture pages via scripting, e.g., including some of our application-specific scripts in the global Scripts menu.

Please note we are currently investigating an issue with our browser extension in Safari and the Share extension on macOS Tahoe. This list should provide many alternative mechanisms to continue clipping.

Should the bookmarklets still be on the Handbooks & Extras page? They seem to have been removed at some point.

Yes, they still are:

I must be looking at the wrong page! But this is the one linked to above:

Are you on macOS Tahoe? Which browser? It seems our device check doesn’t work correctly here and hides the Bookmarklets block. We’re investigating.

Yes, Tahoe 26.0.1 with Firefox and Safari; the Bookmarklets block isn’t visible in either.

Interestingly, the bookmarklets are visible on my Tahoe Mac.

.0.0 or .0.1?

I see them using Safari with .0.1 update installed.

Curiouser and curiouser! I’ve just checked my MacBook still running 26.0.0 and they’re not showing there either.

Not showing on iPadOS 18.7 and Safari either.

26.1.

And now they should show on all devices again. Please test.

I do not see bookmarklets on Safari 18.6, macOS 15.6.1.

Nor on Chrome 140.0.7339.20

All present in Safari on Tahoe 26.1, Sequoia 15.7, Sonoma 14.8, and Ventura 13.7.8.
Spot-checking Chrome and Firefox on Sequoia look good.

You guys are the best. So appreciate the great work and fantastic support.

And now showing correctly in both Safari and Firefox under Tahoe 26.0.1.

debugged offline with DT support. Down to caching by the browser. Toggling the setting in Safari for for User Agent away from and then back to Default resolved the issue with displaying the web page.
