# How to Relocate Indexed Files tip instructions are not correct: at step 4 after pressing Choose nothing happens!
Perhaps providing a bit more context might help to resolve the issue, if there is one.
I doubt that DEVONtechnologies publishes tips that donāt work in general.
Just tried it using an indexed folder (located on the desktop) and successfully changed the path to another folder on the desktop.
Please see here.
No, it does not work. See the clip I attached.
Well, you canāt change the path of a file to one of a folder.
Well ā¦ imagine I know that but I am simply following the instructions you published at: DEVONtechnologies | How to Relocate Indexed Files
which is supposed to deal with files so the instructions are either wrong or incomplete.
Meowky follows a cake recipe faithfully. The recipe involves the following line: Add eggs, one at a time, beating briefly after each addition. Meowky reports that cake looks good but contains very hard particles resembling egg shells. Upon careful investigation it has been established beyond doubt that the recipe does not specifically say egg shells should not be added to the mixture.
Quite light comedy and not helpful.
For the record, I have been changing the location of indexed items for long without using those DEVONthink āhintsā, my point was those so-called hints are useless many of them. Also every time one raises a question regarding quality it is bullied out. Too bad.
How do you suggest Step 4 should be changed?
ATM if I want to move that example file from my little clip into the target directory I select it, drag-and-drop into the target directory and that takes care of the OS location also assuming the OS location is indexed.
I did not manage to relocate the file by choosing the Path property of the file to a target directory. I am genuinely interested to learn how would that be done.
I donāt think thatās true. But the willingness to accept criticism might depend on the tone used by the critic.
Stating that something āis not correctā might come across as harsh. āI did this and it didnāt work for meā might make your point in a better way.
And no one said that this is working. The initial phrase of the tip before the 4 steps says āAfter moving the files in the finderā.
Relocating in this context does not mean āmovingā but ālocating againā. I think.
If you move the file in Finder:
- in an indexed location the Path and DEVONthink location are getting updated automatically
- in a non indexed location, the file simply vanishes from DEVONthink, I can not find even in Orphaned files location
So maybe I miss something, but what does this article try to convey?
Iām confused as to why youād assume you could choose a different indexed item, i.e., choosing a folder when you are dealing with an indexed file.
- If you are trying to establish the new location of an indexed file, you logically would choose that file in the Finder. That resolves the path for that file.
- If you are trying to establish the new location of an indexed folder, you logically would choose that folder in the Finder. That resolves the path for that folder and also resolves the paths of the child items in that folder.
Simple.
Indeed.
Also the topic was not about how to relocate indexed files or folders but about a tip that is included in the aggressive pop-up when the application is started and how actual, useful or confusing it is.
I was so curios to see the actual problem, but it seems the link does not work (anymore).
The link works fine for me. I also donāt understand OPās problem; I think the instructions are clear enough.
Edit: Oh, you meant the dropbox link. Yeah, that was removed not even 24 hours after posting. I didnāt get to see it either.
