Trying to migrate from 3 to 4: .sparseimage cannot be opened

Hi folks, trying to migrate from DEVOMNthink Pro 3 to 4. Have both apps installed side by side on my Mac. Opening 4. Going to File > Open Database. Navigating to ~/DEVONthink. That’s where my MyDatabase.sparseimage is located. However, I cannot open it. It’s greyed out.

What am I doing wrong?

I can take a stab at this. Encryption is fun, if that’s what we’re talking about.

If all is well, you should be able to mount the .sparseimage file from the Finder.

Inside the mount, you’ll see a normal .dtBase2 package, which Devonthink should be able to open.

Close the database before unmounting the .sparseimage.

The extension for encrypted Devonthink databases is .dtSparse.

It’s an interesting use of native OS encryption by Devonthink. DT never encrypts databases, it puts them in encrypted containers, with encryption that’s 100% OS based.

Be aware that when syncing an encrypted database, it’s synced in the clear. Only sync encrypted databases with encrypted sync stores for best security. Also, import as encrypted. Otherwise you have an unencrypted copy of your database on the new computer.

In a shorter version… your encrypted database should have a .dtSparse extension when the database is closed. If it is appearing with .sparseimage, DEVONthink was terminated abnormally, leaving it in this indeterminate state. Change the extension and double-click to open it after you’ve removed the DEVONthink 3 application from the /Applications directory and rebooted the machine.
