Good evening,
any special things to consider when updating from DT 2 to DT 4?
Do I have to go/install through vers 3, or can I jump from 2 –> 4.?
It’s about 14 databases, some small - some big and approx 50 GB of data.

Yes, it is recommended to install and move through version 3. Then from 3 to 4. This ensures a transition of the resources between the versions.
However, your databases don’t really matter as there’s no conversion of the format.
Thanks Bluefrog, for your fast reply - I just like how you guys at DT support the users!
You’re welcome and thanks for the encouragement ![]()
And now for the sync, which is done here with a USB-stick and a xy.dtCloud-file.
Can I go on with it, or you recommend to create a new xy.dtCloud-file?
Still in the game of Devonthink vers. 2 and vers. 4.
If I can go on, is it still possible to sync between a older mac, with Devonthink 2 and a newer one, with Devonthink 4.

That’s up to you, though I hope you’re not treating the sync as a backup.

Feasible? To some degree. Officially supported? No. Version 2.x has been out of development for a long time.
It worked all fine.
When importing the vers 2-db into Devonthink 4, some work was done, about verifying or creating links.
Well, I dropped the sync between v 4 back to v 2, as I want to keep it simple. The integrity of the data is more important.
Is there a list with the new shortcuts? I could not figure out, hot to search in all db’s, former apple+f, etc
When importing the vers 2-db into Devonthink 4,
Do you mean “when opening the database” as there’s no need to import anything from 2 to 4.
some work was done, about verifying or creating links.
Correct. Databases get a health checkup when they’re opened.

Pleaes clarify what you are referring to.
Also, you need to move the version 2 application to the system Trash and reboot the machine.
Is there a list with the new shortcuts?
Actually, yes there is. In the Appendix > Command Keys section of the built-in Help and manual.
Yes, I better should have written: to open the DBs in V4.
I like to have my actual dbs open all the time, and then I archive dbs, that are not part of the actual work, while I keep them in the same folder, as the other dbs. Works fine to me…

Well now, 2 macs are upgrated to DT vers 4, plus I had the idea, to keep Devonthink on a older mac, in vers 2 and to sync between them. I live half a year in one land, and the rest in another one, with different needs, in terms of computer and its use. That’s the reason for that idea.
Off course, at the end of the day, I prefer two healthy dbs, instead of 3 thick ones!
Thanks for your help,
I am a bit puzzled by your word: system Trash.
Until now, I was aware of a trash of a harddisc or a SSD; and then of course, every user has its own trash, even on the same disc. Of course, the system provides all theses trashes, while I never heard about a “dedicated” system trash.
User Trash is very often referred to as “system Trash”, especially to differentiate from the Trash in every DEVONthink database.
Ah ok, that make sense, for some poeple.
Personally, I never ever would have expected DEVONthink internal trash to delete the app, as DEVONthink internal trash moves the documents to the user trash - I think it moves it out of the “catalog” of the database only…. right?

It doesn’t “delete the app”.
Emptying the database’s Trash, does move documents to the user Trash and removes internal references. However, if you’re indexing instead of importing, that moves the files in the Finder to the user Trash as well.
