While I don’t yet technically own a macOS device new enough to run DT4, I’m planning to get one in the new year. As such, I thought this might be a good opportunity to take advantage of Black Friday pricing and upgrade my existing seats. When I visited the site today to do that, I saw on my account page it showed me an upgrade price of $111.75, but when I added the upgrade to my cart it shows as $149 instead. Can somebody help me with that?
A related question is this: will I be able to continue using DT3 on all my old machines once I upgrade to DT4? I found conflicting verbiage on the site. On the one hand, my license page assures me that I have one device out of date ineligible for upgrades and says the license will expire. But then on the upgrade page it tells me I’d technically be trading my existing licenses and the old one will stop working after three months. Can somebody clarify here? Most of my macOS devices are simply never going to be upgraded to an OS version new enough to run DT4 because they’re literally too old to be upgraded.
will I be able to continue using DT3 on all my old machines once I upgrade to DT4?
Yes, but…
They will still consume a seat, so if you have two Macs with two seats for version 3 and purchase a new Mac for version 4, you will need to purchase an additional seat.
Version 3 is in maintenance and will not be developed and supported forever.
But then on the upgrade page it tells me I’d technically be trading my existing licenses and the old one will stop working after three months.
Where are you reading this? That is not the case when upgrading version 3 to 4.
First, it looks like the problem I was having has been solved as now putting the upgrade in my cart reflects the correct price. Thanks for that. Second, my intent was to upgrade all five of my “seats” figuring I’ll eventually need them on new macOS machines someday. Maybe I won’t need all five, but hey, you guys do great work, so if nothing else I’m voting with my pocketbook for DT4. As to where on your site I saw that bit about licenses not working after three months, here’s a screen snippet from my personal upgrade page when logged into my account:
That is referring to moving to a different edition as the licenses for each edition are indeed different. So moving from Standard to Pro would produce a new license and the old would be deprecated in three months. So if you’re upgrading to the same edition, you’re extending the version 3 license to cover version 4. Also, you extend the license, not the seats. So all five existing seats are covered by the one upgrade price.
First, thanks for that, but second can you clarify how “Standard” and “Pro” relate to “DEVONthink Server 4”, which appears to be what I have (and just upgraded)? I’m glad to hear all five seats are covered, but I thought I already had the “Pro” version or whatever the top-end offering is. Maybe that’s just semantics, but words are all I have to understand.
“upgrade” is loosely used as a “downgrade” also produces a different license. Simply said: if you change the edition, you get a new license and the old one stops working in three months.
Fair enough, but again you spoke of “Standard” and “Pro”, and I appear to have “DEVONthink Server 4”. Which is that? I’ve tried to check the current site for the catalog, but it appears to be down
