Versioning for indexed items

I have one database with lots of indexed items (exactly 10,333 indexed items at the moment).

How does versioning work here? Where are the backed-up versions (or deltas) stored? In the index folder? Or in the depths of the database?

Hidden in the database. But only if the documents are edited in DEVONthink, versioning does not (yet) support external editing.

Just to make sure I understand it correctly: For indexed documents (which live outside the database) backed-up versions are stored inside the database, right?
