I’ve been having this visual glitch for a while but never got around to filing a report here. Basically, when viewing Markdown annotations that include block quotes:
GIF of screen recording
My specs:
Latest stable builds of macOS and DEVONthink (15.1 and 3.9.8 respectively) running on Intel-chip MacBook Pro, though I’ve been experiencing this since 3.9.7 at the latest
The example PDF in the GIF is from here, though I’ve seen it happen in basically every PDF I’ve annotated so it should be easily reproducible in just about any PDF+Text file
Some observations:
Turning off WYSIWYG mode always gets rid of all such glitches for me.
This doesn’t just happen in the Annotations & Reminders pane. When I open the Markdowon annotation in a separate window, similar glitches happen as well. In rare cases, the glitches can get so bad that I can’t scroll past the first lines, forcing me to disable WYSIWYG.
I think I’ve only seen this happen in Annotation files (rather than, say, a Markdown file I created and wrote from scratch), so my best guess is maybe the very long and messy URLs inserted by “Insert Quote” is causing DT the confusion?
No, this specific PDF doesn’t have anything to do with the issue, I just picked an arbitrary example file in order to make the GIF demonstration. As I said elsewhere in the post, I expect this issue to be easily reproducible in just about any PDF+Text file.
WYSIWYG doesn’t apply to PDF though. I was talking about this:
Hi Christian, I actually never thought of that. I tried resizing the window and inspector just now, but unfortunately neither seem to have any effect on the issue. I’ll keep this in mind as a potential workaround though, thanks!
One issue is actually that the Markdown quote is not formatted as intended, the back link should not be part of the quote. The next maintenance release will fix this.
Hello Christian, I’d like to report another issue that seems likely to be close related to my original post in this thread.
The issue occurs when I hold down the Up arrow key on the keyboard to try to move the cursor placed inside a block quote. The cursor will move up one line at a time, but after reaching the first line of the block quote, it will always teleport to the bottom line of the block quote, instead of exiting the block quote and continuing going up like I expect it to. Basically it’s trapped in a visual infinite loop inside the block quote:
Some observations:
I can’t identify all the exact parameters (see incomplete list below) to reliably reproduce this issue. In case you’d like the same PDF from the above recording to reproduce it on your end for further troubleshooting, the PDF is available here and the recorded area is on page 2 of Chapter 1 (or, page 8 of the entire PDF).
An incomplete list of necessary conditions in order to reproduce it:
WYSIWYG editing is enabled for Markdown files
It seems this issue only occurs in the Annotations & Reminders pane, i.e., when I open the Markdown annotation file from the recording in its separate window, the issue no long occurs.
It seems this issue only occurs if the block quote isn’t at the start of the document, i.e., when I delete the first two lines (“# Chapter 1” and the empty line), the issue no longer occurs.
I also tried moving the back link out of the quote (by deleting the > preceding the back link and inserting an empty line) but this doesn’t seem to affect this issue.
My setup:
