Which files can be imported?

Numbers. cannot edit
Ever Note: does not work. Requires Legacy Ed. But that is deprecated
Messages. No import
Contacts: I don’t know what it does. Messy.

Please be more clear and thorough when reporting issues or asking questions. This is a discussion forum so it’s helpful to provide more to discuss.

Numbers. cannot edit

That is correct and also already documented in the Documents > Office Documents, Email, and Others section of the built-in Help and manual.

Ever Note: does not work. Requires Legacy Ed. But that is deprecated

This is also documented in the Menus > The File Menu > Import & Export section.

Messages. No import

That is an issue with limitations in Messages due to Apple’s changes over the years, not DEVONthink.

Contacts: I don’t know what it does. Messy.

Also documented in the Import & Export section above.
Please clarify what “messy” means.

I have various .numbers spreadsheet files imported to my Devonthink database
They are edited using the Apple Numbers app
Also .pages files, edited using the Apple Pages app

Devonthink can import .enex files exported from Evernote
Note format is auto-converted to Formatted Note (HTML)

As far as I know, you can basically put any file you want into DEVONthink and just use external software to modify the contents. I think of DEVONthink as my filing cabinet (for those old enough to remember when filing cabinets were the way to store documents/data). You don’t… use the filing cabinet to edit the documents inside it. It’s an organizational tool to help you retrieve the documents you want. Then you use a pen or typewriter to create and modify the documents (in this anology, Pages or IA Writer or BBEdit or whatever is the typewriter).

Thank you for reading my analogy while I avoid working this Friday afternoon!

Vcf files are not displayed. I have exported them from Contacts and now I would like to import into DT and see what they contain.
But I see only a list of names.

You can open vcf in any text editor. But why do you want to look at them? It’s like reading XML, only worse. They are meant for program consumption, not for reading pleasure.

Is the preview pane (see View menu) actually visible? Or did you try Quick Look?

Preview is visible under View menu. But what “pane”?

You see here my VCF file displayed in DT but I cannot click on those names

Does this file contain multiple contacts? How does the Finder display it via Quick Look? The display should be identical.

Yes, the display is identical with Finder.
The only way to see the contacts tel numbers etc is to import to Contacts
But that is not a good idea

Did you try to import all or selected contacts via File > Import > Contacts… in the desired format (probably VCard)?

Yes- import as sheet. Looks awful. Especially the column Pictures is not acceptable. I could not remove that column

A screen shot of the "awful’ one would be useful. More useful would be a word description of, or a mock-up image, of what “not-awful” would look like.

Just try the already suggested VCard format.
