Why no USB sync?

Hi

I read the FAQs and learned there that USB sync is not possible. I wonder why? Or at least why one cannot populate the iPad initially via USB as one can with Goodreader, Sente, etc? There may be an easy explanation for this; I know nothing about developing apps. It sure would be faster than my wifi.

We could use the new functionality in iOS 4 that allows you to add files through iTunes, but a direct USB connection is … unwanted by Apple. Period. We may add iTunes support at a later point in time.

Thank you. I was thinking of something like a desktop app similar to Goodreader where you can drag and drop This is not the same as syncing, however.
