Hello,
I’m so used to have DTP in french so I might wait french version before upgrading to DTP4.
As I haven’t found infos about th app being translated, I ask it here
Thanks and best.
We aren’t committing to a timeframe but French localization is under discussion.
I don’t know how many french speaking clients you have. Probably a lot. I was thinking that as version 3.x is localized, it should not be too complicated to add the french ressources to v4.
The main issue is less the localization per se but the continuing maintenance. Each additional language that we cannot do ourselves (in-house, we speak English and German) makes the update cycle longer and more cumbersome.
Yes, but with AI now, it should be a breeze
Haha. AI might be good in translating longer text. Short snippets – not so much. Think of a „tablier“ on the menu of a French restaurant. Unless the AI has some context and some background in la cuisine française, it’ll not tell you what to expect.
And a UI is very much context free, too. From the POV of an AI.
Actually, a lot less than English or German speaking users who make up about 80% of our customer base. And despite the French localization so far, French was not the 3rd most popular language among our customers, we’re afraid to say.
I understand. But as with all statistics, the percentage does not reflect the quantity . And we all know that Mac users always represented a minority, that’s 15% and 6% if we take into account smartphones and tablets (numbers from 2024).
When I was a teenager, through a relative, I translated something similar to this – isolated text strings, in other words – into Spanish, without having any idea of the context, but knowing the type of machine where the texts would be used. Years later, as chance would have it, I ended up in charge of that very machine – which had been sold several times to other companies over the years – at a company completely unrelated to the original one. This is my current job. When I saw the program running in Spanish, I was deeply embarrassed because it was a mess (the translation was technically correct, but completely out of context). If I, despite knowing the target machine, made such an error, how much more likely is an AI to get it wrong, given that it is little more than a pseudo-random word generator with steroids?
Hello everyone,
I’m French and I really like DEVONthink. It’s probably the software I use most every day. The localisation of version 3 in French has been a major asset for me. I regret that version 4 is not available in French. I sincerely hope that a French translation will be considered.
Thank you to the developers!
Welcome @Chounez
Please read the previous comments on the state of things and realize it’s no simple matter to localize an application and maintain it.
Let’s see and wait.
I’m also dependent on a day to day basis to DEVONthink Pro which act as my paperless office but version 3 is still working perfectly.
The AI thing which comes on every piece of software is not (yet) necessary for me. Neither the Audit.
In fact I should say that DTP is working amazingly good thanks to the developers.
And both are certainly optional. In fact, audit-proof databases are very very specific circumstances, as noted in the help.
Could you please add the option for ai to output the default language, which is very important for non-native English speakers?
The internal commands usually retain the language of the original documents, in the chat assistant and especially in case of poor local models this depends on your prompt.
i am French too but only use English for applications, I noticed that when translated into French it is confusing … Anyway its just me …
I understand perfectly well. I speak Spanish, which is the fourth most spoken language in the world (and, by the way, has great potential in the USA). I’ve been using DTP3 for a while and I’m happy with it even though it’s in English, although I believe I might be missing out on some features. In fact, my main reason for not upgrading to DTP4 is the lack of Spanish language support. If it were available in Spanish, I would have upgraded already. But based on the comments I’ve seen, I’m afraid I’ll have to stick with DTP3 for life. Best regards.
In my case, I use english for application dealing with themes largly managed in englis, such as web design (HTML, CSS). But otherwise french is better.
