Will I receive an update to DEVONthink To Go 4 if I buy version 3 now?

Hello everyone,

Similar to neatcat:

I understand there will be a version 4 of DTTG one day, and that v3 is already compatible with Desktop v4 (apart from the mentioned limits, like versioning if I understood right).

My question is: if I buy the full version of DTTG today, will it be upgraded for free to v4, or will I have to pay again? I know I could just use the subscription model, but that’s not my favorite option.

Have a great day

We don’t discuss license models before the release becomes public but the upgrade to DEVONthink To Go 4 won’t be free if you buy now.

OK, thank you for your reply. All the best

I mean, I don’t expect to get a new iPhone for free once it’s released, if I buy the current version in September.

But often, the software developers offer discounts for purchases made shortly before the new version release date.

Those who subscribe to DEVONthink To Go 3 now will, Apple permitting, be able to carry that over to a version 4 when it becomes available. Only one-time purchases will be subject to a potential upgrade pricing.

You’re right, that’s why I don’t expect it. The difference here is that it’s software, so the marginal cost for the developer is pretty low. And like Apple, which sees iPhone sales drop slightly before the announcement of a new phone, I could imagine people, like myself, hesitant to buy the current tool when I know there is a new one coming up. And since some developers, including Devon I think, sometimes give upgrades for free to those who bought after a certain date, I thought I might ask. I still perfectly understand you don’t want to give any details before the release date. Have a great day

I’m in the same boat. I’m holding off for now on the purchase of the entire suite.

I will reevaluate once everything is on version 4.

If the US economy tanks in the near future I might hold off completely as my finances will likely go into lockdown mode.
