2 questions about searches

Hello, I have 2 questions about searches always in the global inbox database.

1- I would like to type in searches using all available operators described in the manual. My problem is that the search box top right is tiny. If the search is long enough, I can’t see the whole search string, the text is very small and my neck is twisted trying to read (eyesight not perfect). Is there any way to display a “large” long (one line with good font size) search box in the center of the screen ?

2- in those cases where I want to search using a smart group, my problem is that I find it time consuming to complete the “Search in:” to select the specific group every time I want to do a search. Is there a quick way to specify in which group I want to search ?

thank you very much

Use View > Customize Toolbar and remove any extraneous toolbar buttons and spaces.

Also, you can enable the hidden preference, WindowToolbarStyleExpanded. This displays the window title at the top of the window instead of the newer method showing it to the left side (which does consume valuable space). New windows would show the change in the title position.

Here are the two options and the effect on the toolbar search field…

Are you referring to local or global smart groups?

searching within a specific group using a global smart group (for practical reasons, I do not want to create a local smart group for each group).

thank you

So you have a bunch of local smart groups in the global smart groups? It’s your choice but that seems less than optimal to me unless it’s maybe three or four total.

I did not express myself correctly. Sorry.
I want to use only one global smart group. Every time I do a search, I want to start by specifying which group I want to search. I am trying to find a quick way to do so without having to navigate the group tree if I click on search in.
thank you

No worries!
No, there is no quicker way to edit a smart group and change the Search in location.

thanks very much. Big Sur only and I am on Ventura, but cleaning up the toolbar helped a lot

It works on macOS later than Big Sur. That’s when the new style appeared.

Would it at least be possible to duplicate the global inbox search setup and convert those duplicates to local smart groups in which I would only modify the “search in”. In other words, I would use my global inbox search as a template which I would use to create a multitude of local searches ?
If it’s possible, I can create a search menu using Keyboard Maestro in which I would choose from a selection of local smart groups.

thank you

Yes, you can duplicate smart groups and change their criteria.
