Devonthink and Shortcuts app

I am on DT 4b3; is there a way to use the same (almost the same…) Shortcut from DTTG on the Mac? for instance…

thanks

DEVONthink on the Mac doesn’t support Shortcuts (yet). The only workaround currently is to use scripts in Shortcuts instead.

thanks
a short example?

There are two examples in the manual, see Automation > Shortcuts and Automator

thanks
it seems more complicated than Shortcuts app…

It depends. People with no scripting/coding experience will usually find Shortcuts easier. People with such experience usually find Shortcuts more complicated – and infuriating to work with.

Until they have difficulties getting something to work and would need a debugger. Or until they stumble upon one of the bugs in Shortcuts.

Indeed. I went for a short reply instead of going on a rant
I still can’t get over just how slow the interface is, particularly on macOS.

What really disappointed me is that it was actually quite nice before Apple acquired it.

And since several years I amuse myself with the “Get all ATMs in a 1km range” action which invariably returns all ATMs without considering the range. They’re simply not fixing it. And why should they, since Shortcuts is such a fine and easy to use product.

What action do you want it to take in DEVONthink?

I have a couple simple Shortcuts that I use with DEVONthink via the clipboard. They copy or paste text into the currently active app, so I need to remember to be in DEVONthink when I launch it.

Given the fact that I am by no means a programmer…
what I wanted to do is to mimic a Mac script in a DTTG action; for instance how to “translate” into ShortcutsApp this:

BTW I appreciate very much sarcasm from experts, always funny!

This script is 12 years old. You might want to talk to @Stephen_C about journalling – perhaps he has a DTTG Shortcut ready.

I will, thanks, but… I took this as a starting point, a reference…

You appear to be making contradictory – or at least unclear – statements here.

you are right, sorry
I wanted to create on both Mac and iOS one daily journal entry, and to access it from Mac or iOS mutually…
thanks

Thanks for the mention. However, all my journalling is done on the Mac (much easier to write!) and I export from Day One into DEVONthink and don’t actually use DTTG (because I’m not bothered about having my journal entries on my iPhone or iPad).

(Fulsome explanation merely in case anyone else comes across this thread in future!)

I use a DTTG shortcut to create a daily journal markdown doc (wake up time, weather forecast, location). I add info to it as the day progresses. (media consumed, events attended, etc). To make those additions I have a shortcut that allows me enter info and have it formatted as markdown text that I can paste.

I believe others on here practice a variation on that system where each entry is a unique document and under a group for the day . I like my system where each day is all in one doc. To each their own.

Mine is an evolving system and I’ve learned about lots of the quirks of Shortcuts over the last three years. Would I build it from scratch this way? Probably not.

I’ve even been experimenting with using a different software (LogSeq) to journal over the last year. I added some functions to my Shortcuts to cut down on the extra work of keeping a double journal system. That’s probably going to end soon as it’s not better or worse, just different and I am not gaining much from the different format.

I forgot to add that I’ve done it all in DTTG as that’s the device that I have in my hand when journalable activities take place. I also scan receipts almost solely on DTTG now. Rarely touch the journals on DT but I clean up the receipts and do reports in DT all the time.

thanks,
but my goal was to have the same (model of) Daily Journal Note on both Mac and iPhone and to feed it mutually… I never thought it could be so complicated (for a non developer… :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:)
