DT4 : Markdown editor problems (jumping around)

Thanks for the screenshot! But a screenshot of Settings > Editing > Format is the one that would be useful

Is Format > Typewriter-like scrolling enabled for the document?

Are you seeing the behavior shown here: WYSIWYG toggle scrolls Markdown ?

I have tested with Typewriter-like scrolling enabled and disabled. The same jumping effect happens with either when WYSIWIG is enabled. Jumping does not happen with WYSIWIG disabled.

Did you test the specific behavior shown in the screencast I linked? I’m trying to see if it’s local to my Mac or a general issue.

I am not seeing the same behavior as in your video capture.

Thanks.

No

So far I couldn’t reproduce the issue. A screenshot of the complete window while editing plus a zipped copy of the document would be appreciated, thanks in advance! Finally, did this happen e.g. after changing fonts?

Maybe it happened after changing fonts. I remember I messed around with fonts. The issue has not prevailed after I restarted the computer and not messing with fonts.

I could indeed reproduce an issue related to changing the Markdown default font while Markdown documents were visible and this will be fixed by the next release. But apart from that everything else seems to work as expected.

I have some few suggestions for improvements for the markdown editor. Where should I post it?

Ideally in a new thread but please search first for possibly already existing and similar threads.

I just installed DT4 today. Going through the settings, I enabled WYSIWYG images & links for the first time ever, just for fun.

I had the arrows keys causing all kinds of jumping around in my markdown docs. Never seen that before. To me it felt like pressing any arrow key was controlling the scrollbar.

Anyway, I disabled WYSIWYG images & links and life is good again.

I do my markdown writing in DEVONthink. It’s just way more convenient than an external app. I used to use iA Writer. DT4 is better. My research and writing all in one app. Thank you.

Did you change any of the settings while the Markdown document was currently visible? Does this still happen after selecting/opening another document? A screenshot of Settings > Editing > Format would be great, thanks.

This bug is still present for me also. I believe that it involves long .md documents. In my experience, at some point after adding several pages worth of text (I can’t specify how long the text has to be, I will pay attention next time. But I am mainly cutting and pasting), I cannot continue to add text to the raw markdown side, it stops the ability to continue scrollingl. I have to select the preview and then go back to the raw side to be able to unlock and see past the stop . Only way to continue to work is deselecting WYSIWG.

Could you share such a document? A screenshot of Settings > Editing > Format would be useful too.

Yes I did make changes while the doc were visible. I had 3 docs I was experimenting with as I was testing. I did close and reopen DT4. The jumping stopped initially, but after a few presses of the arrow keys, the cursor no longer did the usual moving one character left or right, or up and down one line, it was like pressing any arrow key make the scrollbar move.

After turning off “WYSIWYG images & links,” normal operation began with all open docs.

I had an issue similar to this in Aug 2024. The page would jump up and down when typing in a Rich Text note. I am currently having the same issues with another (rich text) note. Then and now, it appears to be an issue with the text engine in macOS.

This is on DT3.9.13 (on my work Mac). When I open the “offending” document in TextEdit, I get the same behavior, so in this case, I don’t think it has anything to do with DT.

How this translates to a similar problem in Markdown, I don’t know, but thought I’d bring it up in case it helps.
