My goal is to replace Logseq/Obsidian/Drafts/OmniOutliner and use DEVONthink exclusively.
- How do you set up a Daily Note template in MD format?
- Easy to open everyday - one click
- How are the daily notes stored? if options, then suggestions
My goal is to replace Logseq/Obsidian/Drafts/OmniOutliner and use DEVONthink exclusively.
Here’s the short version…
You could set up a shortcut with the name of the template. See…
The documents are stored exactly like any other document in DEVONthink. There’s nothing special because it’s a daily note. DEVONthink isn’t aware that is it
I had no idea you could make your own templates! That is great!
Sincerely?
Indeed, and for a very long time.
Check out the built-in ones we provide pre-installed and via Data > New From Template > More Templates. And also the Appendix > Templates section of the built-in Help and manual.
Really, some of us have very narrow habits. I do have some Keyboard Maestro macros that will create files for me quite quickly, but I am liking this one a lot.
That’s a link to a shortcut for DTTG to make a new markdown journal document.
I used a yyyy->yyyymmm->yyyymmdd.md folder structure for my journals.
If you’re at all familiar with Shortcuts it’s a fairy simple one and easy to customize.
Indeed, though that is technically not a template.
I have 3 screenshots.
Are my two templates set up correctly in the Templates.noindex?
Do I then click on either template to start each day for my daily note?
They are in the correct place but you use them in DEVONthink via Data > New From Template. You’re not accessing them in the Finder.
I used to use Logseq & Obsidian. I had a daily note template that I clicked on and it opened with the Year-Month-Day. The next day with updated year-month-day.
How can I set up daily note with the same ease?
As I already mentioned, you can set up a shortcut for a template.
In the template document, you can put %year%_%month%_%day%
where you want the date to appear. When you use the template, the date should appear as yyyy_mm_dd.
These placeholders can be also used in the template’s filename as always the same name for a daily note might not be preferable
There’s a potential ambiguity in the current discussion that might be causing some confusion. When you wrote “template that I clicked on”, where did you click on the template? Was it in the macOS Finder?
Based on the screenshots posted above, I think you may be trying to click on DEVONthink’s templates in the macOS Finder. What Jim is trying to explain is that this won’t work for DEVONthink’s templates. Instead of trying to click on the template file in the Finder, create a new note by using the DEVONthink menu item that Jim wrote about:
The files that are added to the template folder on disk will show up in DEVONthink’s menu there.
And as a follow-up (since I was away from my Mac at the time ), check out Help > Tutorials > Using Templates…
The Bell finally went off for me! I kept going into the actual template folder rather than go to: Data > New from Template. Now I have a Daily Note starting today. I want to thank Jim & everyone else for all your help.
You can also access the templates via the Actions toolbar button…
Daily Note organization set up? eg. ease to find (visual) for OS & iOS and filing? Thanks again
Thanks Jim for all that you do!!!
And thank you for the kind words of encouragement!
I tried finding the shortcut… which one are you referring to
