I do not understand a warning re license and old databases

I just upgraded my dtp3 database to version 4 with an education license. Now running version 4 on one of my databases, I got a cryptic warning that my DTP3 license will expire in three months, and somehow I understand it as if I will not be able to open my old databases then any more?

Since I do not get the warning again and do not know where to search, please inform my what needs to be done urgently, if anything needs to be done:

I have several databases distributed over several backups since decades. I can open them all in DTP3. And it seems that I can open them all in Devonthink 4 as well. Can I leave them all and, if necessary, open them in one year or later, if necessary, with my actual version?

Thanks for clarifying.

Slightly off-topic: You should not have DT3 and DT4 installed on the same machine and to the same account.

Yes.

The FAQ page should have all the answers:

I would not ask here if there was an answer on the FAQ page.

See @chrillek’s sage advice about running two versions. the upgrade documentation you should have seen explains that. If that does not resolve ask again.

Searching past posts here also explains the risks of running two versions and what to do about it.

How can we know? Providing as much related information as possible helps us to help you. That includes the exact error message you saw.

As DT4 didn’t modify the databases, yes, probably.

I actually think @chrillek’s point was completely on-topic. Since…

…I assume that was a warning from DT3.

Your license is not tied to databases, but to the application.

I haven’t upgraded yet, but I guess the license code changes when you upgrade your license. You would have to enter your new license key in DT3.

But why use DT3 if you have upgraded to DT4?

Edit: the FAQ says:

When I upgrade to DEVONthink 4, do I trade-in my license?
No, all license codes for DEVONthink 3 remain valid and you do not need a new, separate license for DEVONthink 4.

– so perhaps your DT3 version is older than 3.9.11.
In any case, as long as you have a valid license, you should be able to open your databases.

My question was:

“Can I leave them all and, if necessary, open them in one year or later, if necessary, with my actual version?”

From the context I gave it is clear that “them” means my old databases. It is also clear that I am now working with version 4. Those who do not know the answer to my question but prefer to make inferences about my inability to handle Devonthink may just stay away from posting. Also, I can guess myself and ask on the forum to be sure.

Thank you.

I appreciate your kindness. You tried to help me with problems that others brought to the table. I appreciate the time and effort.

Before I know whether I know, I have to understand the problem. If I don’t understand it, I ask. (And I’m not trying to play dumb deliberately, BTW). If you find that insulting, that’s your problem.

We’re in a forum where you request help for free (!) from others. Treating them as adversaries might not be in your own best interest.

On the FAQ page you can find this entry:

I’ve upgraded. What do I do with DEVONthink 3?

If you have fully transitioned to DEVONthink 4, including activating a seat for the machine, you should remove version 3 from at least your user account on your Mac to avoid confusion. You should not have version 3 and 4 on the same account, on the same machine.

At a minimum, you can delete the DEVONthink 3 app from the Applications folder and reboot the machine. Note: You may need to quit Safari first as our browser extension may be loaded and in use.

For information on doing a deeper clean, please contact our support.

This implies – and it is what I understood – that databases that were created with version 3 would continue to work with version 4. That has been my experience so far, but I am just an ordinary user with no special expertise or knowledge of the program, and I would hesitate to give advice that might lead others to make decisions that would lead to loss of data or other difficulties. If people here are cautious about giving advice it may be because they know their own limitations, or they know that things ca easily go wrong because of misunderstandings – especially in an environment in which not everyone is a native English speaker and where there may be cultural differences that also get in the way.

If you want definitive answers quickly, it might be advisable to email tech support directly.

There is also an upgrader’s guide which might be useful:

There is no change in format from version 3 to 4, so there’s no migration or transition of them either. They will open in 4 as they did in 3, no matter how long they sit idle.

Thanks a lot. That solved my problem.

Although I needed an answer in the next three months as can be seen from my first post, I appreciate your kindness chiming in now.
