Is there an iOS markdown editor that works with DTTG?

OK, thanks, I checked those articles. Perhaps I made some assumptions of what’s currently possible with the iOS file sharing APIs. I’ll need to check the Multiple Copy app by the way, to see how it manages this issue, and also as a Git client. I can see many benefits for having an encrypted DEVONthink sync system as a hub for information management on iOS.

BTW, I’ve tried for a while to put “everything”, such as notes, bookmarks, etc into DEVONthink instead of having them in separate apps such as nvALT, Pinboard, etc. This approach has certain benefits for having them in one searchable and taggable system. One thing that made me go back to using Pinboard for bookmarks, and the current Dropbox sync for Markdown notes, is that the DEVONthink sync system isn’t on par considering speed and reliability when making quick notes, adding bookmarks, etc.

Yes, with Open In and External Files / Folders support, DTTG could work as such a central hub!

You could simply use all compatible Apps as usual and simple sync the remote with DTTG at some later point.

Same workflow as with Working Copy … but Working Copy does not encrypt the remote and has not the search and tagging capabilities of DTTG.

This very thread pointed me into the direction of 1Writer and I gave it a closer look

It does what to my knowledge only Drafts does: It starts blazingly fast with a new and empty note. No preliminary picking of notebooks, file format, &c., is necessary. So far, so good.

Putting a note into DTTG or opening an existing one is possible. As it is with a number of apps, be it via OpenIn or an “ancient” x-url scheme.

But what I find most intriguing about 1Writer is that it allows to customize its standard file folder. Quite unusual on iOS/iPadOS. The option to pick a Dropbox folder has been mentioned above. But I would prefer if was possible to pick a DTTG folder/group as its standard file folder. It is not, the DTTG folders are greyed out.

Is it a restriction of iOS to not allow one app to automatically have access to the folder of another app? Or is it due to a restriction of either app?

I would assume that it is a limitation of iOS. I experience the same thing with iA Writer and DEVONthink to Go, and also with another app that functions similar to DEVONthink to Go.

I believe it’s both ends of the equation. I have heard that dropbox when working with some apps does not allow the book marking of folders, but I could be wrong here. But from the discussion I heard on a couple relay FM podcasts, it seems that both the apps in question need to implement it. But I imagine the bigger hurdle is iOS.

I think the main problem is that DTTG relatively weak if you want to capture more sophisticated notes on iOS. This is particlularly tru e if you want to follw the Zettelkasten methodology in my experience. If links cant be made to apps like 1Writer would it be better replacing with a more functionally rich one? I would be interested in other people’s experience.

The next major version of DEVONthink To Go will have a better text editing experience.

Version 2.8 or 3.0?

Any ETA, vaguely?

Free update or costing money?

This is really great. DEVONthink To Go has too many unsupported files and needs to be shared to open externally. I hope DEVONthink To Go can support opening (editing) more files, not only the function of the companion, I hope DEVONthink To Go can Add a function to add external folders under the database itself. I wonder if this is possible?

Editing is less likely, depending on the format. Proprietary formats (like Word or Pages) will not be editable.
There are many things we are considering and exploring at this time. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

This is very good and long awaited news! By the way, congratulations on the beautiful DT3 interface improvements. I have for so long wanted to create and edit text docs inside DT but the experience was so raw that it turned me off. This is a big driver of users to find other apps with pleasantly designed interfaces. DT3 is a good step.

Aside from this, my wish has always been (on the desktop at least) to, for example, right click on a group to create a new document (of whatever type I have on my machine). Is there any hope for this kind of functionality? It’s a third world problem, but I’ve always been a bit peeved that I need to first open a new doc, then find it and move it into DT. Since I use DT to organize all my projects I just want to create directly within that environment.

There is an iOS/iPadOS Markdown editor called Pretext. After launched it looks almost like Apple’s Files app:

The two obvious exceptions are the app’s name on the left and the huge + symbol amongst the folders of the destination. This could very well be a DT database or any of its groups. And yes, Pretext does remember the last saving place, you don’t have to tap through the app and folder hierarchy every time you launch it.

That’s the good part. Now comes the bad: Pretext does not offer any markdown editing functions beyond those of DTTG. After hitting the + you have to add the text’s name before you can start to write. And the editor itself does have some Markdown (not MultiMarkdown) highlighting but no extra keyboard row to insert Markdown control characters or other often used but laborious to reach characters. There is no automated pairing of brackets or any automation possible. Tagging is not possible from within the editor, only in the Files like view.

Therefore it has no use for me. But maybe for others here. Try it, the basic version is free and if you like it you will be charged for nothing more than a buck for the additional dark mode.

If 1Writer could directly access to DTTG like Pretext that would be perfect as 1Writer is customizable. Not as much as Drafts but Drafts always has to use an action as its notes are buried in its own database and are not separate files that can be shared with other apps.

I’ve been playing around with this JavaScript editor. It seems to work okay.

Big ia Writer fan here. Lets you pull out anything from your document sources, has a beautiful and cheap companion macOS application, doesn’t tie you into a proprietary document silo, and is just a great-looking, pleasant-to-use editor. Use it both on the iPad and macOS with the DEVONs as my main editor.

Can only second what @davem brought.

I tried on both iOS and OsX to work w Drafts and other editors and ended up investing in IaWriter for both platforms as a perfect companion to DT, because it does so much less than other editors but does it so well.

Sometimes less is more …

Third vote for iA Writer. Fingers crossed, DTTG should have edit in place sometime soon.

Yes, iA Writer is the best!
And it also offers a Windows Application, BTW

In case of minimalistic and pretty inexpensive setup, especially if you work with wikilinks and want their automatic update > i can recommend

  • 1writer on IOS (can open & files directly in devonthink), i believe is somewhere around ~ 5 eur
  • Obsidian on Mac (support automatic update of wikilinks and many more features for markdown), free

Another +1 for iA Writer. A cheaper alternative is iWriter Pro where periodically they discount the price and also have a Mac version.

I currently use 1Writer, which works pretty well as others have mentioned.

@BLUEFROG I’d really like to see a future DTTG extend its markdown support in two areas: 1/ support the highlight syntax (e.g. ==yellow==) and render check boxes (e.g. [ ]) as active checkbox icons (e.g. :white_check_mark:) in the rendered markdown view so that that can be “checked off”. Those two additions would fill the needs I have for external markdown editors.
