I have the following smart group:
But as you can see from the screenshot below, unlike the other smart groups, it does not show an item count. “Books” should have a 1 next to it (one item appears in the main window when you click that smart group).

Is the item count shown after selecting & deselecting the smart group again? Not all smart groups show always the item count as this might require too much time for processing.
No, it still isn’t showing. Which smart groups show the item count, and which ones don’t? Is there a way to show all the counts for those of us with a sufficient processor?

No, there is no distinction in hardware or resources for this kind of display.
That is custom metadata you’ve created, so it has to be evaluated and found. This creates a slow smart group.
This is a slow smart group …
If you used an actual kind, e.g., Image, it would show the item count as that’s easily evalutated. That would be a fast smart group.
Many thanks for the info, good to know. Working my way through the manual too!
Is it still the case that many smart groups can’t show the item count in Devonthink? It would be great if they could - even if you had to manually update the count periodically.
The item count of smart groups/rules having complex/slow queries are still not shown automatically.
