I agree that it would be great to have a more streamlined way to add images (ok, links to images) to a markdown file. In my most frequent use case, it is just pasting an image from the clipboard. Most markdown-based tools editors (e.g. Typora, Obsidian, Roam) upon pasting will deposit the image file in some repository and the link to it in the markdown document, and the image is rendered in preview (or immediately in Roam’s case).
It would be great to have something similar in DEVONthink… I don’t really care where the images are stored, as long as they are linked to my document, but perhaps the image repository can be set in the preferences so that the user can choose where to save them.
A smart template creating groups is a reasonable workaround, but IMHO creating one group per note defeats the purpose of having groups (especially if you search by group a lot, and have many notes with images), and also you often don’t know when you start a note if you are going to paste an image in it or not.
I do not from where your images come from but you have several ways to incorporate them into DT in a separate folder ie. img and drag and drop the links into markdown.
You could further use the screenshot feature from the sorter panel and save your images directly into your folder.
In this case you got all your information together.
Also for drag and drop images, try using Yoink or Dropshelf as an interim solution. Drag from browser to shelf, then drag from shelf to your editor. Credit to Elaine Giles DEVONthink3 tutorials for that (possible) solution to the OPs issue.
Update: have long given up on Devonthink and note taking. I switched to Obsidian and index my obsidian folder with DT. between the sync and the UI/UX issues with DT, i just can’t trust it to handle my notes.
because a somewhat unreliable sync in DT isn’t that bad when it is basically a second data store and not the main store.
not being able to quickly find or create notes on mobile is not an issue when it isn’t the main store.
not having proper editing and previewing capabilities is not as much of an issue in my second store either
