hello, after upgrading today to version 4.0.2 (sonoma)
the interface fonts are tiny, and must be changed. I found the explanation below in the help and find it incomprehensible. There was no problem with version 3.
You find what specifically incomprehensible?
PS: The Chat Text Size will be described in the next release.
1- version 4 the interface font is tiny: item list, side bar, etc What do I do ?
2- in ver 3 my global inbox was a mix of groups and smart groups. With version 4, they are separate. How can I remix them as they were with version 3 ?. I seem unable to drag smart groups into groups in the sidebar (always in the same database).
2- If I have both version 3 and 4 installed on my mac, may I continue to work in version 3 and work in version 4 from time to time. I am submerged with work, and don’t have time to play around correcting problems with version 4.
thank you
You should not. Has been said often already.
I am not happy with version 4 and want to go back to 3. thank you for your reply.
where ?
In the forum. In the FAQ about the upgrade.
OK thanks
Can I delete ver 4, ie drag and drop to trash and continue with version 3 ?
The labels in the interface are not changed in size from 3 to 4. The font controls you were showing earlier are for increasing the font size in the item list, certain inspectors, etc. You can change them and see what they affect.
Version 4 has not changed in this regard either. The same controls apply in both versions. See Settings > General > Interface, e.g., Unify Inboxes.
Also, I see no issue drag and dropping groups into other groups in the Navigate sidebar. Is there a crossed pencil icon to the right of the database’s name?
@chrillek is correct and we have mentioned this often on the forums. You should not have version 3 and 4 available on the same account, on the same Mac. Delete the DEVONthink application. That’s all. Do not run an uninstaller application.
PS: DEVONthink 3 will not be developed and supported in perpetuity. I am giving no timeframe on it, but be aware of the situation.
I am sorry: I don’t see what you are referring to. Exactly where ? thank you.
DEVONthink → Settings → General, and then the Appearance tab.
Stephen
Thank you very much @Stephen_C !
If you have the patience: with ver 3 (which I deleted), my smart groups were mixed in with the other groups in the sidebar which is very convenient. Now, after installing ver 4 (sonoma), the smart groups are kept separate in the sidebar, and I am unable to drag and drop a smart group into the group listing.
I only use the global inbox, no other databases.
thanks again
example of smart group I normally keep at the very top of the global inbox group listing in the sidebar
Which is an approach you might want to reconsider.
I’m able to create smart groups in the global inbox. And to copy them to the Global section in the sidebar (drag/dropping there creates a copy, it doesn’t move the smart group). But you are right: I can’t move any smart group into the global inbox, even if its “Search in” refers to the global inbox.
@bluefrog: Feature? Bug?
Global smart groups are limited to the sidebar, neither version 3 nor 4 support this.
I think that there is a bug, namely that in some rules and groups, the upgrade converts the "search in " of smart groups. In addition, I know the layout of my sidebar and it definitely has changed between 3 and 4. The only solution I could find is by RE-CREATING the smart groups one by one which very time consuming in which case after that those re-created smart groups can be mixed with other groups.
I suggest that upgrade instructions include the suggestion to make snapshots of ver 3 settings, because many are changed in ver 4 and it would save time not to have to troubleshoot them when an issue arises. (I am very happy I took snapshots before)
thank you for your reply @cgrunenberg
it’s the problem of forfeiting replicants. I could not live without them. thank you for your reply.
I was wondering about two things in this context:
I’m not saying that anything is wrong here, just that it surprised me.
I discovered that one of the problems I had upgrading is that the upgrade 3→ 4 changed the database group sort order in the sidebar (right click on database) to include kind which I did not have. This prevented me from drag and drop from smart groups to the other database groups. Just letting you know.
Just for clarity as it might help with some of your framing, DT4 is not an “upgrade”. It’s a new app (hence why you managed to “break the rules” and have both installed at the same time). The team made it so we could copy over various key things from DT3 to DT4 (e.g. smart rules), but you will need to spend an hour setting it up how you like it and exploring the new menus. Certainly in my case I haven’t spent more time than that in setting up my menu bar, increasing my fonts, setting up my markdown styling, etc. I’m sure I could spend many more hours on it, but I don’t need to. The rest will emerge naturally I’m sure!
I didn’t understand your comment on replicants and the global inbox but replicants work in databases. The global inbox is only intended to be a temporary home for files that enter DT, it’s not really intended to be their “final home”.
