Unexpected behaviour with sync during file amends

Since I moved to DT4, I changed the sync interval (CloudKit) to run hourly due to the sync running constantly and the database icons flickering as a result (discussed in the forum here). I thought this had addressed the problem, but this morning I was updating a rich text document and every time I made an amend, the little log window would pop up to say “uploading to CloudKit”. It would run without issue and then disappear. It’s likely it’s been doing this since I changed my sync interval, and I simply hadn’t noticed until this morning when I had no windows open except the document I was working on.

To me, this isn’t expected behaviour, as I’ve told DT to only sync once an hour (and also it feels sensible that the upload only goes to CloudKit once the document is closed perhaps, not every time I make an amend). My DTTG only download on demand and were not open at the time.

I’m unsure whether I was meant to change some settings on my DTTG devices at the same time as updating the sync interval on my Mac, and whether this is causing the issue. My queries are:

  • Have I missed a setting somewhere? (And if so what do I need to change?)
  • How can I disable this behaviour if I didn’t miss a setting? (and is it normal or a bug?)

A screenshot of Settings > Sync would be useful, thanks.

Sorry, I wondered and assumed it wouldn’t tell you much!

Deactivating the app or push notifications triggered by other devices might also trigger the sync.

It’s not that, I don’t have push notifications enabled on DTTG and the devices that have DTTG weren’t in use at the time.

As it happens, I hadn’t done a hard close of the app on either device (phone and iPad) so I just did that and then tested it again, but it’s till running a sync as soon as I do an amend, so it’s not because the apps weren’t shut down properly.

Any other ideas?

I’ve just realised I might have misunderstood your comment. What are we defining as “deactivation”?

I was working in and out of the “active window” so DT won’t have always had the “focus” on my Mac. Does that count as deactivation?

Switching to another app is a deactivation.

Thanks for your help with this, Christian. To summarise, “deactivation” basically means DT isn’t the main/active window on Mac. So ticking the “On quit or deactivation” box for sync means that DT syncs every time you navigate away from DT.

This seems like sensible behaviour and does mean DT is working the way it’s been told to work (Yey! Good news for you!).

I think maybe it doesn’t suit me because I’m in and out constantly when I’m working in a file and I’m finding it distracting (also today it’s spending ages syncing a image-heavy PDF I didn’t even amend, I assume because I accessed it).

It’d be cool if we could separate out “sync on quit” and “sync on deactivation” to eliminate this issue, as it makes me nervous to not have sync on quit and it’s the latter that is causing an issue for me. But just because I think that would be nice doesn’t mean other people will!

I will trial not having sync on quit and see if it causes any issues for me.

Thanks again for your help!
