Woo Hoo! DTPO 3.0 (Beta)!

First off, I just want to say that so far I really like the update and appreciate all the work that went into it.

With that said, I just want to bring up what seems to be change in viewing options that changes my workflow (unless I am missing something and that certainly is possible).

In DTPO 2 I live in the 3 Pane view with the widescreen option. There doesn’t seem to be the 3 Pane view option in DTP 3. It basically looks like some of the functionality of the second column (displaying the folder structure) was basically merged into the the first column by now being able to drill down the folder structure in open databases.

However, what seems to be missing is the ability to select multiple folders and have all the files contained in the selected folders display in the third column. In DTPO 2 the 3 Pane view with widescreen enabled there was a nice segregation between open databases (column 1), just the folder structure (column 2), the files contained in each folder (column 3), and the selected document itself (column 4).

The functionality of being able to select multiple folders in column 2 and have all the enclosed files displayed in column 3 was great and I used it everyday.

Now, with widescreen enabled, column one has the folder structure (but multiple folders cannot be selected, column 2 has a mix of both folders and files when viewed as a list (which looks cluttered when expanded), and column 3 has the selected document itself.

Am I missing something? Was this design change intentional, or is it just missing currently from the beta?

That’s correct. It’s meant for using in teams where not everyone needs to run DEVONthink on a Mac.

Yes, that’s correct.

We didn’t want to make the Editions comparison page an endless list of features that are in all three editions. Therefore we just listed the differences.

And yes, we have rearranged the features so that some ended up in the new Pro edition.

I know you aren’t going to please everyone… But that is a huge price increase for the web server capabilities that already exist in DT2. Even with the upgrade discount it is still $399. I don’t work on a team, but rely on the web server when I am at work with my windows computer. You just priced me out of that capability.

See also & Classify dramatically slow on changing from one document to next one and on move to (Ctrl-C). Sometimes order of two minutes when DT2 in same db is about one second… Is this known?

Same happens on right click, it takes about 30 or 60 seconds to open context menu on each item…

Ok, I think I’ve found why this is so slow. Now “See also & Classify” looks in all open database, not the only where the inbox is… Nice to have but quite slow when you have more than 10 well populated databases… For me, that slow speed is a blocker.

You. might want to see the separate thread on the web server

I respect the decision; it’s your product after all. But I have to say that it’s a little disappointing for me as a previous user to have paid-for features taken away. Especially, the download manager is essential to my workflow in DEVONthink, but I will think twice before paying for a hefty premium to keep it available to me.

Can’t even begin to figure out upgrade price from 2 to 3. I can’t find a page with if you own DTPO 2, DTPO 3 will be X dollars.

I did download it, BUT when it opened it asked about server??? Not sure how to download just Pro 3. But I got nervous about the whole server thing. I closed and quickly deleted the app. I just wanted DTPO 3.

But after reading this thread, I know I can’t afford $399.00 as someone stated above for upgrade after discount. But I understand some can.

The $399 upgrade is for Server version. Basically Pro plus the web server component that is part of DT 2.0.

The upgrade for going DT 2 Pro to DT 3 Pro is around $99.

CUSTOM METADATA IN COLUMNS??? KILEEEEEEER!!

About dang time. Excited

Congratullations!!
This is great news and version 3 looks incredible. Time to dive on the new features!
I just purchased the Pro Office version around 6 months ago and sadly I need to pay the upgrade for a few months but really happy to try your hard work!

If you go to your account and your list of licences, click on the one for DT v2 and you’ll get a table giving you upgrade prices specifically for you (e.g. if you’re in education, you’ll see the relevant discounted price, if you bought after 1 Feb, you’ll see the 0 price and so on)

If you’re not (!) going to use version 2 anymore, then you could move the folder ~/Library/Application Support/DEVONthink Pro 2/Cloudy to ~/Library/Application Support/DEVONthink 3.

In case of concurrent usage of both versions you could create an alias of the above folder and add it to DEVONthink 3’s app support folder.

But do not (!) copy the cloudy folder, this could create a mess.

How large are the opened databases (number of words/items, see File > Database Properties)? In addition, is still enough memory free (see Apple’s Activity Monitor.app) or does virtual memory slow down things already?

I know it is a lot, but with DT2, each “See Also…” worked only on its own database. I (and I assume a lot of people with big or a lot of databases) will need to sort this problem or the program will become completely unusable.

When doing the operation, CPU goes about 99% and memory does not cross the border of the 15GB, when I have more free memory and no swap pressure. Take a look to the picture.

Christian, thx for all the work in this new version. Have jumped in full time. Which files/folders need to be deleted to remove all traces of DTO v2? Steve J

It’s indeed a lot of stuff, the amount of unique words in some of your databases is insane and the total word count exceeds 1 billion. Do the databases with more than 1 million unique words contain a lot of OCRed PDF documents?

Removing the app, the app support folder (~/Library/Application Support/DEVONthink Pro 2/) and some caches (~/Library/Caches/com.devon-technologies.thinkpro2 and ~/Library/Caches/Metadata/DEVONthink Pro 2) should be sufficient.

Yes, most of those are Indexed PDF. The thing is with DT2 works fine as it only do the operation for its own local DB.

Said that, if DT3 will work having all the stuff for each operation, then the option to have more than one database loses part of its sense, as does not matter what you have in what, it will be accounted. And opening and closing databases doesn’t seems optimally to me.

Perhaps best solution could be have one option to disable Global and go back to Local only, even if it is one do the hidden options… Or the ability to have more than one full and isolated DT3 session open…

I’m using DT because is not a OneNote (that is crap) or Evernote replacement, I’m using DT because it “correlates” all my stuff… Not having that option, the reason to use it decreases a lot.
